BOMEX Halifax 2025: Connection, Innovation, and the Value of Partnership

There are industry conferences — and then there’s BOMEX.
Every year, it somehow manages to outdo itself. This year’s event, hosted in Halifax, delivered energy, ideas, and some much-needed clarity during a few reflective waterfront walks that helped me absorb it all. The city’s coastal buzz and forward-thinking mindset captured what makes our industry thrive: people, purpose, and progress.

A Warm East Coast Welcome

This was my first time experiencing Halifax through the lens of the commercial real estate world — and from the moment I arrived, it was clear this city knows how to host. The BOMA Canada team curated an event that was not only educational but deeply human. From the opening reception filled with Maritime hospitality to the conversations that spilled into hallways, this wasn’t just another conference — it was a gathering of people who truly care about building better communities.

Innovation Meets Operations

Day one dove straight into the future of property management — from smart building technology to sustainability strategies that are reshaping how spaces operate.

One keynote that stood out explored how data-driven operations and predictive maintenance are transforming commercial properties. As someone in the janitorial and facility services industry, it was a powerful reminder that cleaning companies today are not just vendors — we’re strategic partners in the overall building performance equation.

Modern property success depends on collaboration across every layer — property managers, operations teams, maintenance professionals, and yes, janitorial providers. That’s where companies like Picture Perfect Cleaning thrive: turning service contracts into long-term partnerships built on trust, consistency, and measurable value.

Why BOMEX Matters for Janitorial Companies

Events like BOMEX aren’t just for developers, asset managers, and building owners — they’re an incredible opportunity for janitorial and facility service providers to connect directly with the decision-makers shaping the industry.

At Picture Perfect Cleaning, we believe the best partnerships are built on understanding. By attending BOMEX, we gain firsthand insight into:

  • Emerging property management priorities — from sustainability certifications to ESG reporting.
  • New building technologies — including automation systems and IoT integrations that influence cleaning design, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort.
  • The evolving expectations of tenants and owners — where cleanliness, safety, and well-being are central to a building’s value.

When you’re in the business of maintaining spaces that people love to be in, understanding these broader trends is invaluable. It allows us to stay ahead — not just keeping properties clean, but helping them perform better.

Halifax Waterfront: The Perfect Reset Between Sessions

Between sessions, I carved out time to walk the Halifax waterfront — multiple times, actually — and it became the perfect reset. The boardwalk buzzed with locals and visitors, the sea air, and that unmistakable East Coast energy. Grabbing a quick coffee, watching ships glide in, and taking a few minutes to reflect on takeaways helped me come back sharper for the next conversation.

Those short walks reinforced why facility operations and janitorial services matter so much: the experience of a place — clean, safe, welcoming — shapes how people feel and how they perform. It’s the same lens we bring at Picture Perfect Cleaning: details add up to trust, comfort, and productivity.

The Power of Connection

The networking events were alive with conversation — property managers sharing stories from across the country, suppliers showcasing innovative solutions, and professionals building relationships that extend far beyond the conference floor. I had conversations that sparked ideas for new partnerships, cross-industry collaboration, and future podcast episodes that will keep these discussions going.

Takeaways from BOMEX 2025

  1. Sustainability Is the Standard
Green cleaning, energy efficiency, and waste reduction aren’t optional anymore — clients expect measurable, accountable practices.
  2. Technology and Teamwork Drive Efficiency
Smart buildings and automation are only as effective as the people and partners who operate within them. Collaboration between property managers and service providers is key.
  3. Culture and Care Are Competitive Advantages
The companies thriving today invest in people — training, recognition, and values. That’s core to how Picture Perfect Cleaning shows up for clients and teams.

A Night to Remember: Celebrating Excellence

The BOMA Canada National Awards Gala closed the conference on a high note. It’s always inspiring to see peers recognized for leadership in building operations, innovation, and sustainability. These awards remind us that every successful building story is the result of countless dedicated professionals — from executives to cleaners — working together toward excellence.

Final Reflections: The Business of Building Better

Leaving Halifax, I felt re-energized and optimistic. BOMEX is more than a conference — it’s a snapshot of where our industry is heading.

For companies like Picture Perfect Cleaning, it reaffirms why we do what we do: to make spaces shine — not just physically, but operationally and emotionally. Clean, safe, and well-maintained environments don’t just protect assets — they build trust, attract tenants, and foster community.

A huge thank-you to BOMA Canada, the Halifax organizing team, and every industry leader who shared their expertise and energy. It was an incredible few days of learning, connecting, and growing together.

FAQ: Why BOMEX Matters for Janitorial Companies

How does attending BOMEX benefit a janitorial company like Picture Perfect Cleaning?
It keeps us aligned with property managers’ priorities — ESG, tenant experience, and smart-building operations — so our cleaning programs support your building’s performance goals, not just appearance.

Does conference learning translate into better day-to-day cleaning results?
Yes. We bring back practical upgrades — optimized schedules from occupancy data, safer chemistries, waste-reduction practices, and QA processes that match how your operations team actually runs the site.

What’s the value for property managers and owners?
Fewer headaches and better outcomes: cleaner, safer spaces; tighter coordination with building systems; and reporting that supports certifications and investor ESG requirements.

Isn’t cleaning just a commodity? Why invest in a partner who attends industry events?
Commodity inputs create variable results. A partner engaged with industry best practices designs cleaning around risk, occupancy, and outcomes — reducing complaints, rework, and total cost of operations.

What specific improvements did PPC bring back from BOMEX Halifax 2025?
Three quick wins: (1) occupancy-aware cleaning routes, (2) expanded green products list aligned to current standards, and (3) enhanced QA checklists that map to property teams’ reporting needs.

How does PPC measure success after implementing these improvements?
Shared KPIs: response time, work-order closure rate, audit scores, tenant sentiment, waste diversion, and incident reductions — reported at agreed intervals with simple dashboards.

The Hidden Cost of In-House Cleaning

A professional cleaning supply cart inside a commercial office building with yellow mop and bucket attached to one side of a black push cart, and a garbage bag on the other.

A wage comparison only tells part of the story. Here’s what usually gets left out:

Wages and Benefits

Payroll is usually the first number people look at when they think about cleaning costs, but it rarely tells the whole story. Supplies, equipment, manager oversight, scheduling headaches, and the inevitable sick days all add up over time. By the time you account for everything, the true cost of keeping cleaning in-house can look very different from what’s on the payroll report. That’s exactly what our cost comparison tool is designed to help you see, along with what outsourcing might save.

Supplies and Equipment

Cleaning products, paper goods, vacuums, floor machines, and the replacement parts that keep them running all add up over the course of a year. Businesses that clean in-house often buy retail-grade supplies at retail prices because they don’t have access to the commercial pricing that a cleaning company gets from its suppliers. Equipment also breaks down, and replacing a vacuum or floor buffer every few years is a cost that rarely gets planned for in advance.

Management Time

Somebody has to schedule shifts, check the quality of the work, order more supplies when they run low, and step in when something gets missed. That’s real time pulled from a manager’s actual job, and it rarely gets assigned a dollar value, even though it should. If a facilities manager or office lead spends even a few hours a week on cleaning oversight, that’s time not spent on the parts of their role that actually move the business forward.

Absenteeism and Coverage Gaps

Sick days and missed shifts are part of running any team. When they happen, the work still has to get done, which usually means paying someone else to cover the shift or accepting that some tasks will have to wait. Over the course of a year, those extra costs can become surprisingly significant. There’s another effect that’s harder to measure, too. When cleaning is inconsistent, people notice. Employees notice it, clients notice it, and visitors notice it, even if they couldn’t tell you exactly why the space feels different.

Cost Category What It Covers
Wages & Benefits Annual pay for in-house cleaning staff
Supplies & Equipment Products, tools, and machine upkeep
Management Time Hours spent scheduling and supervising
Absenteeism Missed shifts and last-minute coverage

Why Outsourcing Often Comes Out Ahead

Two professional cleaners, both wearing light blue t-shirts under black coveralls with black caps in an office building ready for their work day.

Once you’ve seen your own numbers, the reasons behind the gap start to make sense.

Predictable Pricing

A cleaning company quote covers labor, supplies, and equipment on a single line. You know what you’re paying before the work starts, and that number doesn’t shift because someone called in sick or a vacuum broke down. Budgeting gets easier when the cost of cleaning is a single line item rather than four separate ones scattered across payroll, supplies, and management time.

No Coverage Gaps

When a member of an in-house cleaning team calls in sick, someone on your staff has to figure out what happens next. With a professional cleaning service, that responsibility shifts to the provider. If a cleaner is unavailable, arranging a replacement is part of the service, so your team isn’t left scrambling to fill the gap.

Accountability Built In

Picture Perfect Cleaning holds COR certification and provides regular service reporting, so you can see what’s being done and when, without spending your own hours checking on it. That’s the management time most in-house teams never get back. Our team also uses EcoLogo- and Green Seal-certified products, so you’re not trading cost savings for a lower cleaning standard.

Wages are only one line in what in-house cleaning actually costs. Once you add in supplies, the hours a manager spends overseeing the crew, and the gaps left by sick days, the real number is usually higher than what shows up on a payroll report and often higher than what a professional service would charge for the same work. That’s the gap the tool above is built to show you, along with what outsourcing could put back in your budget.

Our cost comparison tool gives you a reasonable estimate of what you could save by switching to a professional cleaning service, not a final number. Every building is different, and factors like your cleaning schedule, the size of your facility, and the services you need will affect the actual cost.
